Seek MORE With Janiya

This summer, we are highlighting our four interns who decided to seek MORE this summer with us. We are getting to know them through their writing and learning what Seeking MORE means to them.

My name is Janiya Woolfork, and moving to Indiana in middle school made me slowly love the community I am a part of. Moving here as the oldest of 6, there was a lot of pressure on me to be a good example for my sisters.

Some of that came from the pressure I put on myself. I never wanted people to be mad or annoyed that one of my younger sisters was in their classrooms because I had been a “nuisance” before. So throughout school, I made it a point for every teacher to like me, which meant I was really involved in school. Growing up, I always wanted to learn about people, since everyone sees the world differently and has a unique perspective on everything. I asked questions about all of it: Why is a chair called a chair? What do clouds taste like? I thoroughly enjoyed talking to people older than me to learn how they lived.

As I got older, I started to explore different hobbies, like fashion, food, and trying different sports. I grew to love reading and arts and crafts; I am always looking to learn something new. Between middle school and high school, I joined different communities so I could learn about the world around me – Girl Scouts, drama club, and student publications. In student publications, I found what I am passionate about, which is telling the stories of those around me.

Through the yearbook’s Instagram, website, and magazine, I got to tell peoples’ stories and show people they are important. In my student publications I became the first managing editor at my high school and was given the role because I knew how it felt to be starting as a new publications student and how to help others grow in their confidence and abilities. My teachers wanted me to be the person I needed sooner so that everyone had a chance to shine in the class.  This role put me to the test in a lot of ways: organizing, problem-solving, and learnship.

As I grew in our student publications, I decided to continue learning how to tell peoples’ stories by declaring a major in media at Ball State, where I’ll be starting this fall. As I begin this adventure, I am thinking of minoring in something related to the culinary arts.

I’m choosing to seek MORE this summer to learn if I am ready for the world of media and journalism. I have been in my high school bubble, and I want to see if I can handle being on my own in the journalism world since I know it is a competitive world. With this internship, I want to seek MORE into the networking and behind-the-scenes of being my own boss and making a name for myself. This opportunity will hopefully teach me more about myself, instead of being just a high school journalist, but a real one.
